Foster Pride student work featured at SPINEXPO
Foster Pride’s HandMade program, sponsored by Brilliant Global, provides the opportunity for young women in foster care to develop and launch their own line of handmade and crocheted items.
The HandMade program was born out of a simple request from a social worker at one of the Manhattan group homes Foster Pride works with: could they teach the teen girls at their residence how to crochet? In this new program the teens quickly discovered that crocheting is not just calming, but also highly creative. They began avidly consulting books and magazines and coming up with designs for their own scarves, hats, blankets and pocketbooks - and were crocheting morning, noon and night! That spring, two years ago, the girls held a sidewalk sale of their work to raise money for AIDS–and experienced their first taste of entrepreneurship. And pride–people wanted to buy the things that they had made!
Today, young women in the HandMade program not only enjoy the hands-on experience of crocheting, they have created their own store on Etsy, an online marketplace for handcrafted items. An important part of the HandMade program is the Career Component which gives participants opportunities to learn from and connect with successful professionals in creative industries. Through HandMade they participate in the job interview process, explore computer and graphic design programs; learn about marketing, basic entrepreneurship and the fundamentals of small business management; and gain self-esteem from their creative successes. Most importantly the teens in the HandMade program have discovered the joy of crocheting, creating, and of building on their experiences to develop skills that will help them on their career paths.
The work of the teens in the HandMade program will be featured at SPINEXPO NY, an exhibition featuring the most comprehensive and creative international offering of yarns and fibres, knitwear manufacturers and innovative knitwear machinery manufacturers
SPINEXPO, July 18-20, 2011
